Common KaVo Problems and What Causes Them

These are the faults we see most often on KaVo instruments. Select a symptom to see the usual cause and how we resolve it.

A MASTERtorque or EXPERTtorque that feels weak and struggles to cut

Likely cause: Worn turbine bearings. On KaVo high-speeds the cutting performance falls away noticeably before any dramatic failure occurs.

What we do: Turbine cartridge service restores full performance, and we verify it under load rather than by ear.

A rising high-pitched sound during operation

Likely cause: Deteriorating bearings inside the turbine. This is normally the earliest audible warning a KaVo gives you.

What we do: Precision bearing replacement and concentricity verification before the imbalance damages the head.

Burs no longer held securely

Likely cause: A worn chuck mechanism. On most KaVo high-speeds a turbine replacement resolves this along with the bearing wear.

What we do: Chuck or turbine replacement followed by a bur retention test.

An ELECTROtorque or other electric losing torque

Likely cause: Head bearings are the most common electric failure; failed intermediate drive shaft bearings are the second most common.

What we do: Diagnosis of which of the two has gone, then rebuild of that assembly and torque testing across the range.

MULTIflex coupling losing air or water

Likely cause: Worn coupler O-rings and seals, which degrade steadily and mimic a failing handpiece.

What we do: Complete seal replacement at the coupling, with air and water paths verified end to end.

Dim fiber optics on an 8000-series or MULTIflex instrument

Likely cause: Contaminated or fractured optical fibers, or a clouded rod lens.

What we do: Optic cleaning or fiber replacement with light output measured against specification.

What Happens to Your KaVo Handpiece Here

Every KaVo repair follows the same six-stage bench process. Nothing is skipped because an instrument looks straightforward.

Inspection and diagnosis. The instrument is examined under magnification and run on test air so we can confirm the actual fault rather than the reported symptom. Concentricity, bearing condition, chuck grip, air and water paths, and fiber-optic transmission are each checked.
Free written estimate. You receive a detailed estimate before any work begins. Nothing is started without your approval, and if you decide against the repair we return the handpiece free of charge.
Disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning. The handpiece is fully stripped and ultrasonically cleaned. Years of dried lubricant, autoclave residue and debris come out of passages that surface cleaning never reaches.
Component replacement. Worn bearings, O-rings, seals, turbines and chuck components are replaced. We manufacture roughly 85% of these parts ourselves in Orange, California, to tolerances that meet or exceed the original specification.
Reassembly and calibration. The instrument is rebuilt to the manufacturer's torque and alignment specifications, then lubricated to that manufacturer's requirements — not a generic procedure.
Performance testing under load. Every repair is tested under working load, not merely spun up. We verify free-running speed, concentricity, chuck retention, water spray pattern and fiber-optic output before it is cleared to ship.

Why Our Parts Matter for KaVo Repairs

Most repair companies buy replacement bearings and turbines from third-party suppliers, which means the quality of your repair depends on whatever that supplier shipped. That control matters most in the bearings. Bearing tolerance and cage material determine how long a rebuilt handpiece survives, and it is the specification customers never see and cannot verify. Manufacturing our own means we set that specification rather than inherit it.

Making Your KaVo Handpiece Last Longer

Most of the wear we see is avoidable. These are the points that make the largest practical difference:

KaVo recommends sending handpieces to a service center at least annually for inspection, cleaning and calibration, even when nothing appears wrong. Bearing wear is progressive and largely silent until late.
Check drive-air pressure at the MULTIflex coupling against the figure in your instrument's manual. Over-pressure shortens turbine life dramatically and is one of the most common causes of repeat failures.
Lubricate through the correct port for the model. Oil pushed through the wrong passage on a KaVo can reach the chuck and cause exactly the bur-slipping problem you were trying to avoid.

Yes. Both are among the models we service most often. Loss of cutting power and a rising high-pitched noise are usually worn turbine bearings, and a turbine service restores full performance. Every repair is tested under working load and carries our 9-month warranty.

Can you service KaVo ELECTROtorque and other electric systems?

Yes. On electric handpieces the head bearings fail most often, with the intermediate drive shaft bearings second. We diagnose which has actually failed rather than replacing everything, rebuild that assembly and test torque across the full speed range before it ships.
